Oils and hand made collage papers to depict standing stones in a dry summer landscape. The largest stone is delicately balanced on top of two others. The artist has made part of the balanced stone translucent so the viewer can see the light on the horizon line through the stone.

Insistence

Exile Avenue

In the left foreground is a standing stone that appears to be staring towards a disappearing horizon in a summer landscape, casting a shadow behind that contrasts with the scorched earth on the right of the painting. The distinction between land and sky is hazed by the bright light that suffuses the painting.

Scorched Stone

A large standing stone appears to be growing through exuberant summer grasses and flowers backed by vibrant yet delicate lilac-blue hues.



Budstone

A very sculptural shape, the standing stone depicted has the poise of a monumental abstract statue and so has a commanding presence despite the small scale of the painting. The subtle use of reds and the purple-tinged blue of the stone contribute to the regal air of the figure.



The King's stone

Some of the standing stones in Wiltshire, my home county, are like placed sculpture, making their demanding presence felt, others seem to have grown more organically, pushing up though the chalk plains, growing among the grasses and wildflowers.

I am currently developing a collaborative project that has sprung from my ongoing standing stones series so the pieces shown and those still on my easel will be released for sale at the project exhibition.
