A very sculptural shape, the standing stone depicted has the poise of a monumental abstract statue and so has a commanding presence despite the small scale of the painting. The subtle use of reds and the purple-tinged blue of the stone contribute to the regal air of the figure.



Painted after visiting the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire, where stands the King's Stone, close to his Whispering Knights. 

In more recent times myths have been woven around standing stones, a testimony to their strong presence in our landscapes
