Water Jewels

Oils and hand made collage papers to depict standing stones in a dry summer landscape. The largest stone is delicately balanced on top of two others. The artist has made part of the balanced stone translucent so the viewer can see the light on the horizon line through the stone.



The Lightness of Stone

In the left foreground is a standing stone that appears to be staring towards a disappearing horizon in a summer landscape, casting a shadow behind that contrasts with the scorched earth on the right of the painting. The distinction between land and sky is hazed by the bright light that suffuses the painting.

Scorched Stone

A large standing stone appears to be growing through exuberant summer grasses and flowers backed by vibrant yet delicate lilac-blue hues.

Exile Avenue

A very sculptural shape, the standing stone depicted has the poise of a monumental abstract statue and so has a commanding presence despite the small scale of the painting. The subtle use of reds and the purple-tinged blue of the stone contribute to the regal air of the figure.



The King's stone

Dense woodland reflected in deep water. Incisions into the paint imply ripples, the flow of water and refracted light. Reflections and waterweed mingle below the glazed surface.


Emerald

Vibrant, narrow brush strokes in the foreground imply grass at the edge of sky reflected in a pool.Contrasting darker shapes at the top left suggest reflected trees, while broken outlines, perhaps branches, complete the composition.


Peridot

Tree trunks, a bright sky and scudding white clouds are reflected in a puddle. Leaves seem to float on the water's surface  - or perhaps they are floating up into the sky? 


Sapphire

A dark bush and lush green vegetation grow on a bend in a slow moving stream that reflects a blue sky. The verdant landscape slopes away from the edge of the pool.


Verdalite

Lush green trees and vegetation by a river. The underside of the trees are in deep shadow but a clearing behind the central tree and it's upper branches catch the late afternoon sunshine which glows on the water.


Amazonite

Very dark green water in the foreground created with perylene green oil paint. The water lightens slightly in the mid-ground and then sparkles at the lake's banks where lily-pads float. Towards the top of the painting the trees grow at the edge of the water and a blue sky contrasts with the dark water.





Still Waters: Deep Tourmaline

The top right hand quarter of this painting depicts bright green trees over sunshine sparkling on the edge of a lake. To the right shadows deepen over the parkland. The darker waters of the lake show deep reflections of the trees merging with the water weed growing in the depths.


Still Waters: Agate

Sunlight shines through a waterfall and is reflected back by wet sandstone rock.



Glint

The painting is a the view a walker would have as they pick their way over stepping stones to cross a shallow stream. The stones seem bound together by strands of silver 

Slate and Silver

The sea has pulled out after a stormy night leaving seaweed strewn among small rocks and pebbles across the sand. On the shore little pools of water and wet sand reflect low pink tinged cloud that is blowing out with the tide. The sky is fresh and promises a beautiful day. 

The Morning After

Lit by a strange yellow light the clouds loom and swirl over the cliff which, slicked with blues and purples seems charged with electricity.  The wet rock-face reflects back the errie light before the storm.







Hovering Storm, Polzeath

In the lower part of the painting a bright elliptical pool of seawater is framed by wet sand. In the bottom right of the painting is a darker patch of sand or soil created by the artist with powdered charcoal and grit. Hanging above is an eerie orange cloud, illuminated on the right by a bright sky and in the shade of a ominous cloud threatening to engulf the scene from the left. 



Jurassic Light, Dorset

A bay of bright water at high tide under a winter sky of a blue so light it is almost white, contrasting heavily with the volcanic headland and rocky shore rendered in a mixture of oil paint and charcoal. The smallest hints of pink in the sky are reflected in pools between strewn rocks and boulders 

Los Silos 1

Early morning sky over a bright sea as waves tumble over each other in a race to the sandy shore. At the foreground the rocks are tinged a pinky brown by the dawn light shining through the pink clouds in the otherwise blue sky 

Sennen Dawn

Looking south across the wide sandy beach of Widemouth Bay towards the sandstone headland. In the foreground seaweed sways in the soft wavelets of the shallow water through which the colours of the sand is visible.

Soft shore, Widemouth

The sea swells vigorously in the foreground of the painting, in the mid ground surf is about to break on a large wave that is sucking the wave that went before into its undertow. Above a dark storm-cloud is lit by a hidden moon.

A glittering sea under a blue summer sky and candy clouds. Sparkling waves reach the shore along an empty stretch of the coastline 

From the coast-path, Perranuthnoe to Marazion

This piece shows the turning of the tide between two dark headlands as storm clouds roll away to the right and a clear sky brightens the shallow water in the inlet. In aftermath of the storm tide rocks and sand are cluttered with stones and tangled strands of seaweed.
