Mixed media work showing a large stone balanced on two standing stones dominating the open landscape

The Lightness of Stone

50x60cm (53.5x63.5cm framed)

Oil & painted hand made collage papers on cradled board

This painting is inspired by the Devil's Den on Marlborough Downs, so named by Christians long after it was built in Neolithic times. It is also known as Clatford Bottom Stone. I was amazed at the way the enormous capstone seemed so carefully balanced over two grounded stones - and then I realised that the two stones on the ground have fallen and the structure is held in place by modern cement. Thought to be a dolman burial chamber, it is hidden away on farmland close to Fyfield Down and requires a hike with an OS map as there are no signposts or dedicated car park
